We are re-living the Weimer Republic and 1933 is looming on the horizon. Europe’s vacation from history is over and the besetting sin of Europe, Jew hatred, is raising its ugly head once again. Last time was nearly fatal; is Europe really going to go through this all over again?
Consider the headlines from this past month:
“European countries condemn anti-Semitic attacks amid Gaza conflict, German mosque investigated for ‘murder’ sermon” (AP, cited from the National Post, July 22, 2014)
This article informs us that the foreign ministers of Italy, France and Germany “condemned the rise in anti-Semitic protests and violence over the conflict in Gaza, saying they will do everything possible to combat it in their countries.” Everything? Really? It would help if they did something for once. How about starting by closing down mosques that feature sermons exhorting people to kill Jews? One suspects that their determination to do “everything possible” is somewhat, ahem, overstated.
Europe’s Jew haters crawl out of the shadows” (Joshua Keating, special to the National Post, Aug. 6, 2014)
A synagogue in central Paris was attacked and crowd chanted “Kill the Jews” and “Gas the Jews.” Didn’t we fight a bloody war to eradicate this evil from Europe less than 65 years ago? Are the vermin back already?
“Is the Gaza conflict stoking anti-Semitism in Europe?” (Eric Reguly, The Globe and Mail, Aug. 3, 2014)
The short answer is “yes.” Three things are converging: (1) Muslim supremacism and hatred of Jews, (2) residual and reflexive European anti-Semitism that was once thought extinct and (3) the anti-Zionist movement, which functions as a cover for “respectable” anti-Semitism. Europe casually tolerates #3, is in denial about #2 and can’t do a thing about #1. But don’t worry, European elites assure us that the Muslim minority will be assimilated any time now. That’s the good news; the bad news is that it will be assimilated to the revived neo-Nazi movements.

Speaking of the Nazis: the symbolic significance of the firebombing of the synagogue in Wuppertal, Germany is not to be overlooked. I’m not talking about the second last time it happened – on Nov. 9, 1938 – but about the last time it happened – on July 29, 2014.

When even the Guardian gets it, you know it is bleeding obvious and impossible not to notice. Wait! Not the New York Times too!
“Anti-Semitism Rises in Europe Amid Israel-Gaza Conflict” (New York Times, Aug. 1, 2014)
Now, even the NYT can see the real reason Jews are leaving France, Sweden, Germany, and other European countries in numbers not seen since the 1930’s. Angela Merkel and other leaders have condemned the rise in anti-Jewish behaviour, but increasingly the governments do not control the streets.
“Cameron has silenced the only minister who understands Islamism” (Damian Thompson, The Spectator, Aug. 22, 2014)
Michael Gove has been demoted from Education Minister to Chief Whip. This certainly appears to be appeasement in the face of Muslim pressure. It comes only two weeks after a Muslim member of cabinet quit because of Cameron’s support for Israel’s defensive war against Hamas. Pure coincidence, I’m sure. See the next headline.

My question would be why a Hamas-loving Muslim was in a Conservative cabinet in the first place. It would be impossible to imagine that scenario in Stephen Harper’s cabinet because Stephen Harper stands firmly for the right of the Jewish people to live free of persecution in their own homeland, Israel. A Muslim who complains that Israel is defending herself in the face of unprovoked terror attacks from an organization whose charter calls for the killing of all Jews is a pretty dodgy character, in my opinion.
“Britain prepared to suspend arms to Israel” (Matthew Holehouse,The Telegraph, Aug. 12, 2014)
But it gets worse. “Britain will suspend some arms exports to Israel if the ceasefire in Gaza breaks down, it was announced tonight. Twelve export licences for components for tanks, military radar systems and combat aircraft that could be used by the Israeli Defence Force in Gaza will be suspended “in the event of significant hostilities”, the Business Department said.” How cowardly can you get? David Cameron is not a squish; he is a leftist masquerading as a conservative. Margaret Thatcher, where are you when we need you?
“U.S. Funding for Hamas?” (Wall St. Journal, June 6, 2014)
Well Margaret Thatcher is definitely not serving as president of the United States. Anything the craven David Cameron can do, Barack Obama can do better. The Wall St. Journal condemns the Obama administration for funding the terrorist group Hamas through the legal fiction of a “unity government” between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. The PA is not designated as a terrorist organization and Hamas is, so pretending that the two have reconciled and joined together is necessary in order for Obama to funnel arms money to Hamas. Sick.
Conclusion: In view of this, it should have come as no surprise that the Obama administration did everything possible (short of sparking a rebellion by Democratic members of Congress) to aid Hamas in the Gaza war. Charles Krauthammer was painfully accurate when he called John Kerry “the lawyer for Hamas.”
It is impossible to read these stories, and the hundreds of others I could have linked to, without experiencing real trepidation about the future of the West. Europe may be in permanent recession a la Japan and it is aging, economically stagnant, militarily weak, religiously sick, governed by elites who are in denial about the real problems and increasingly infiltrated by Muslim invaders who do not intend to remain outside the halls of power for long.
Civil war, or at least widespread street violence, is a serious possibility because of the huge democratic deficit resulting in the governing elites not being able even to hear or comprehend the disdain ordinary people hold for their policies and their stewardship. Multi-culturalism has failed. Enlightenment reason has failed. Big government has failed. The culture of death is everywhere: abortion, euthanasia, drug addiction, and even the basic refusal to procreate are rampant.
As the Middle East rises, Europe declines. Another major milestone will be the fast-approaching day when Iran goes nuclear, likely followed immediately by Saudi Arabia. Expect European capitulation to the Muslim Middle-Eastern powers to accelerate. By comparison, Russia will seem positively benign.
There are two big questions: (1) How long can European culture survive? and (2) will America wake up or will it elect another “European president” to succeed its first “European president” and continue down the road taken by Europe? It has been said that the Jews are the “canary in the coal mine” and that a society in which anti-semitism has become common is a sick society. If so, it is time to declare a cultural health emergency.
